Welcome to UZ: Stay Focused, Finish Strong
By Ruvimbo Msindo
Firstly, let us congratulate you. You made it to the prestigious University of Zimbabwe — the university that is applied to by many, but only a few are chosen. That acceptance letter is proof of your hard work and you should be proud. But getting in is just the beginning. At this juncture we lose many in the long run, not because they weren’t capable but because university demands a different kind of discipline.
What I’ve learnt in my time here is simple: focus is everything for a student. Nobody is going to come after you and clean your mess. No one will chase you for lectures, assignments, or deadlines. It is you who makes the rules here. The freedom you have is real but so are the consequences. If you lose focus now, you will reap exactly what you sow later.
So to my fellow freshmen: learn to be a responsible student until the end of your 4 years. Choose your friends wisely, protect your time, and remember why you came here. It’s very sad to see brilliant people not make it to graduation because of small, avoidable mistakes. You were chosen to be here. Now choose to finish. We’re rooting for you
