Why You Should Build a Startup at University
There is a dangerous myth quietly circulating among students: “I’ll build my startup after I graduate.” That belief alone has buried more potential companies than lack of funding ever has. I write this not as a theorist, but as a practitioner. I am a cofounder of Granoo, an agritech startup - and every one of my cofounders is a university student. We are not “preparing” to build. We are building. And that experience has revealed a truth most students never realise: University is the most startup-friendly environment you will ever have - and most people waste it. The Silent Paradox of Universities Universities invest millions into: - Innovation hubs - Research centres - Entrepreneurship programmes - Corporate partnerships - Alumni networks Yet many of these spaces sit empty and silent, like graveyards of unrealised ambition. Not because students lack ideas. Not because they lack intelligence. But because they are trained to become employees, not founders. Perspective shift: Universities don’t lack innovation - they lack founder-minded students. The Greatest Advantage You Will Ever Have (That You Will Lose) At university, you have leverage you will never fully recover again: Failure is cheap Experimentation is tolerated Asking for help is easier Talent is concentrated Time is still flexible Outside university: Failure is expensive Networks are gated Time is monetised Risk is punished Perspective shift: University is the only stage of life where society expects you not to know - and forgives you when you fail. Why would you waste that? Innovation Hubs Are Not Waiting Rooms One of the most painful things to witness is innovation hubs treated as: Study spaces Event venues CV-padding centres They were never built for that. - They exist for: - Prototyping ideas - Testing markets - Building MVPs - Failing fast - Iterating loudly Perspective shift: An innovation hub is not a classroom. It’s a laboratory. And laboratories are meant to be used - not admired. The Employee Mindset Is the Real Constraint Most students unconsciously ask: “Who will hire me?” “What job is safe?” “What degree pays well?” Founders ask: “What problem is broken?” “Who is underserved?” “What system can be rebuilt?” This is not about arrogance. It’s about orientation. Perspective shift: Employment solves personal risk. Startups solve systemic problems. Africa does not need more risk-averse graduates. It needs builders. Granoo: Proof That This Is Not Theory At Granoo, we are building an agritech solution rooted in a real African problem — market access and exploitation of small-scale farmers. We are learning: Strategy while executing Finance while forecasting Operations while breaking things Leadership while still students University did not slow us down. It accelerated us. A Final Word to Students If you are waiting to graduate to start building, ask yourself: What exactly are you waiting for? Permission? Confidence? Certainty? Those never come. Final perspective shift: University is not preparation for real life. It is real life - with training wheels. Build now. Fail early. Learn faster. The future is not built by the most qualified. It is built by the most positioned.
