Does graduating with a college degree guarantee you will get hired or find your dream job ?
"Get your degree, get a job." That’s what we were told growing up, right? Now, just wrapped up my first year of university, I’m starting to realize that things aren’t that simple. The job market in 2025 is a completely different game – and just having a degree doesn’t mean you automatically get hired. Lately I have been looking at job listing's relevant to my field with hope of maybe landing an entry level job. → Employers are getting flooded with 250+ applications for entry-level roles → "Entry-level" now somehow means "2-3 years of experience required" → 73% of hiring managers are saying they value skills and experience over just having a degree It’s been a reality check. A degree is important, yes. It shows you can commit, learn, and follow through. But in today’s world, it’s more like a baseline – not the golden ticket we thought it would be. Here’s what I’ve learned really matters: • Building practical skills (even through side projects or volunteering) • Creating real-world results you can show • Networking intentionally – not just adding random people on LinkedIn • Staying consistent, online and offline • Being flexible when your first plan doesn’t go as expected I'm shifting my focus from just chasing perfect grades to actively building a portfolio, gaining experience in any way I can, and having real conversations with people in my field. To other students: You're not falling behind — you're waking up to the actual game being played. To recent grads: Rejections don’t define your worth. Every step, even the tough ones, is part of your path. The market is competitive, but we’re not powerless. What’s something you wish someone told you about the job hunt before graduating?
