Go on be a kid in first year
The first friend I made at university was a girl who was just as excited as I was to embark on our journey in our preferred degree program. She was a breath of fresh, unfiltered air.You know those people who, after just a few minutes of conversation, make you know their whole life story? That was her. Her openness drew me in,yet as time went on, I realized we were as mismatched as water and oil. She had a lively social life, frequently changing boyfriends as effortlessly as she changed her jackets. Although she was my only real connection at that time, I made the difficult decision to distance myself.Over the years, her seemingly reckless behavior gained her popularity, making her the talk of every gathering. Despite everything, I remained blunt with her; there was still a soft spot in my heart. It's strange how we can care for someone even when we know their choices aren't right. Have you ever found yourself liking someone who is clearly not good for you? One of my fondest memories was when I went to pay my fees and I remember I had collected my offer letter prior but I was still in disbelief. As I waited in line to pay my fees, I kept imagining the lady at the front desk telling me she was sorry there had been a mix up and there was no place for me but alas she asked me for my reg number and I fumbled looking for it on my offer letter my sisters had not told me about this reg number thing so I didn’t know what I was looking for but the lady seeing me fumble asked I hand her the letter which I did and she called it out to me as I wrote it down before she accepted the card and swiped my fees. After she handed me the receipt I finally released my breath, slow ragged breaths. Its as If I wanted to cry and also scream of joy at the same time.Things were getting real. First year was a whirlwind of unadulterated fun. After unpacking, my friends and I would sit in dimly lit pathways and talk to random strangers. We were young, carefree, and everything felt like an adventure. There were moments when we would play fashion police, laughing until our lungs hurt. I made four close friends Bianca, Devon, Sharon, and Solo and together we created a community of mutual friends, often crossing over to visit each other. We didn't know or care about the nightlife that existed outside our little bubble. We just enjoyed being kids, laughing, and having fun. Looking back, I realize how important it was not to rush into adulthood. First year, with all its naivety, remains my favorite because it was a time of pure joy. There is a park with some wild animals made of steel and in 1:1 Toxer told me that at night the security guard would turn on the remote and all the animals would come to life and if we ever went to the park at night, we would see the animals running around and I believed this. One time towards exams we all went to the classrooms as a group and atarted looking for an unlocked study room to have our noisy discussion and we came back around 12 midnight and as we passed the park with steel animals I asked Toxer why the animals were not mobile and he said maybe the guards forgot to turn on the remote that day and again I believed this . I only started to think no man that was a lie in second year or so . To all the incoming first-year students starting in August, don’t rush to grow up. If all you want to do is hang out with friends and enjoy simple pleasures, then do that! You don’t need to feel pressured to dive into the club scene. Embrace your youth, make memories, and cherish the moments of laughter and friendship. After all, university is not just about academics; it's about growing, exploring, and discovering who you are. Reflecting on my university experience brings a mix of nostalgia and gratitude. I learned the importance of friendships, the thrill of new beginnings, and the joy of simply being young. Cherish your first year; it lays the foundation for the rest of your university journey.
