It’s not that you become broke on your graduation day… the truth is, you were already broke, you just didn’t see it. University life has a way of blinding us with comfort, distractions, and a false sense of progress. Only a few students ever realize this early those who remove distractions and start building while still on campus. Here’s why most graduates end up broke 1⃣ Your Parents Are Still Providing Everything Let’s be real at university, you’re living on borrowed comfort. Fees? Paid. Accommodation? Paid. Food, transport, pocket money? Paid. But after graduation, that supply line cuts instantly. Suddenly, life gets real. And if you haven’t built something that can sustain you, you’ll feel the shock immediately. This is why your university years are your preparation years not just for exams, but for independence. 2⃣ You’re “Doing Business” But It’s Not Really a Business Selling airtime, clothes, or food on campus isn’t bad but let’s be honest: most of those things are just short-term hustles. A hustle feeds you today. A business builds you for tomorrow. When I was selling ZIG airtime, I realized I was spending time on something that couldn’t scale. That’s when I understood: University is the best time to build a business that you’ll grow after graduation not one that dies when you leave campus. If you sell clothes, dream of owning a boutique one day. If you do hair, picture your own salon brand. Don’t just chase quick cash. Build for the next 10 years, not just the next weekend. Because money isn’t the goal growth is. 3⃣ Over-Focusing on Academics Yes, education is important. But here’s the truth: If you over-focus on academics alone, you’re training yourself to depend on someone to hire you. University should teach you how to create, not just qualify. Use your degree as a tool to create opportunities, not a certificate to beg for them. Build something on the side something that can feed you after graduation. Don’t wait for opportunities; create them. 4⃣ The “I’m Still Young” Syndrome This one is dangerous. Many students think they still have time. That they’re still “too young” to start anything serious. But the truth is, once you hit 20 you’re already an adult. Stop hiding behind the label “student.” When someone asks, “What do you do?” don’t just say, “I’m a student at…” Say, “I’m building a digital media startup, and I’m also studying Computer Science.” See the difference? One answers from identity. The other answers from vision. Your university life is your safest time to build something real before life pressures hit. Start that idea now. Grow it slowly. Reinvest your profits. Learn. Fail. Build again. Because when you graduate, no one’s waiting to fund your dreams. Final Thought Let’s stop relaxing. Let’s stop blaming the economy.
