WHY CAN’T WE LEARN TO BUILD?
We need to talk about a hard truth one that many avoid: learning without implementing is a trap. It sounds productive on the surface, but deep down, it's just a clever form of procrastination. Let’s be honest we’ve all been there. As a software engineering student, I used to think success meant knowing more: Python, Java, C, C++, C# (yes, the entire "C" family), Flutter, React, Node.js, you name it. I believed that stacking these technologies would somehow make me the “best” engineer. I even thought it would guarantee me a job or internship. But let me tell you something real knowledge alone doesn’t create impact. There’s this myth in tech education that the more tools you know, the better you become. It’s partly true but dangerously incomplete. One day, I was watching one of my favorite speakers, Jim Rohn, and he said: “If you become a man of knowledge, you become a fool. But if you let knowledge lead you to action, you become wise.” That hit me hard. I looked at myself and thought: “Why am I obsessed with learning new tools when I haven’t even used the ones I already know?” I had Python. I had Django. I had ideas. What was I waiting for? That was the day I made a bold decision to start building. And that’s how VarsityBlog was born. I stopped collecting tools like trophies and started creating with what I had. The Mindset Shift: Learn to Code. Code to Build. Build to Solve. That’s now my mantra. Whenever I pick up a new technology, I ask myself: “What can I build with this? What problem can I solve?” If I can’t answer that, I pause. Because learning without purpose is noise. You see, builders don’t just bring bricks to the site and keep piling them. That would be foolish. Builders bring what they have and start building. If they need more bricks later, they go and get them. So why are we, as learners, carrying around bricks of knowledge and never laying a single one into a foundation? Learn With Purpose. Build With Intent. Solve With Passion. I’m not against learning. In fact, learning is powerful. But it only becomes powerful when it leads to creation. We are born creators. Wired by God Himself to innovate, to shape, and to build. So don’t waste your genius collecting certifications, tutorials, and technologies without creating something of value. Before you jump into the next course, the next framework, or the next shiny programming language, ask yourself: Have I used what I already know? Have I built anything with it? Am I learning to build or just learning to feel smart? If we all asked these questions, we would stop being stuck in theory and start building solutions — businesses, apps, platforms, startups — the future of Africa. Final Word: Learn to code. Code to build. Build to solve. Then repeat. It’s not about having everything. It’s about using what you have — and watching it multiply. Let this article be your wake-up call.
