From struggle to Triumph
From Struggle to Triumph: My University of Zimbabwe Journey As a Part 3 Biomedical Engineering student at the University of Zimbabwe, I'm thrilled to share my life-changing experience with you. My story is a testament to the power of resilience, hope, and divine intervention. During my Part 1, I faced numerous challenges. Financial struggles forced me to wear old clothes and shoes, zvekuti kunyara taitonzwa nemi, and I couldn't afford a laptop. I used an old P36 Itel phone with battery issues. I stayed at my uncle's house in Crowborough, Harare, and commuted to school, often struggling to pay transport fees. To cope, I carried a small wardrobe with me, hiding my clothes and food in a hole in the wall near Dr. Mushiri's office in the Faculty of Health Sciences upstairs, faculty office building. I pretended to my friends Clive, Travor, Ever and Tshii that I was studying or had other plans, hiding my struggles. Despite these challenges, I persevered. I recall being forbidden from writing a physiology exam due to outstanding fees. I rushed to the administration block, pleading my case, and managed to take the exam. One harrowing experience remains etched in my memory. I was sleeping on a bench near the pharmacy building, shivering in the cold and rain. Two kind-hearted girls covered me with a fleece, saving me from the bitter cold. I never got to thank them, but I'll always be grateful and wish to know them. I Could eat one pack of mhandire (maputi egango) and drink water in the morning, and then another pack in the evening. But, One thing i made sure was to make sure i passed all my modules. Just when all hope seemed lost, my brother's fortunes changed. He secured opportunities that enabled him to pay my fees on time, and I was able to move into on-campus accommodation. My story teaches me that no matter how bleak life may seem, there's always hope. God can transform your life in mysterious ways. Never lose faith, and always believe in yourself. Keep praying, reading, and pushing forward. Your breakthrough is on the horizon. I hope my story inspires you to hold on to hope, even in the darkest moments. By Nathan Kanyemba
